This month's featured artist is Marc Schimsky, who currently has a studio in Binghamton New York. Marc sent us this description of his work.
Artist's Statement Much of the imagery in my work stems from my early experience as a printmaker. Within the past couple of years, my work has become focused on rendering experience and the visual memory of that experience. As a result, my paintings, drawings and mixed media works have featured an explosion of textures, graphic lines and color that conjure up a multitude of emotions.
My mixed media works communicate issues of memory, identity and the experiences or reflections of the past. Recently, I’ve been trying to capture in my work that certain sense of a moment lost, of a season or an hour glimpsed, or of an encounter missed. I have always been a great admirer of the works of John Hultberg, Jack Shadbolt and Max Beckmann. These artists have influenced my work in a profound and enduring way.
Marc Schimsky is originally from Long Island, New York, and now has a studio in downtown Binghamton. He and his wife recently purchased a home in Montrose, Pennsylvania. Marc's art has been shown widely throughout the northeastern US and he has won many awards for his energetic and expressive paintings, drawings, etchings and mixed media. His work has been exhibited in such places as the Fredericksburg Center for the Creative Arts in Virginia, the New Jersey Center for the Visual Arts, the Circle Gallery, Annapolis, Md., and the Firehouse Gallery, Garden City, N.Y.
Marc has conducted numerous water-media workshops in Italy and the United States. He has taught painting, drawing and printmaking for over 34 years and has trained many outstanding artists. Marc has been the recipient of many teaching awards including the Louis E. Yavner Award from the New York State Board of Regents, the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation's "Power Of Art" Award, and the P. Buckley Moss Children's Charities Foundation Award for outstanding achievements in the field of visual arts education.
