The wonderful thing about rug hooking is that it does not talk back.
After teaching English to high school students for 30 years, becoming a “hooker” seemed a reasonable thing to do. I reluctantly took lessons and became immediately addicted to the point where I am not happy if I don't have something to hook.
Though I have hooked fine cut Orientals and some fruit and flower patterns, I am happiest doing original pieces or copies of primitive antiques and the humorous patterns my friends send me. Patterns I have helped develop from Magdalena Briner, a talented 19th century Pennsylvania woman, are now marketed by Barbara Carroll at Woolley Fox. I have spent the last several years researching and hunting for her rugs to credit her designs. Also Beverly Conway Designs carries a full line of some 30 plus stair risers with elongated animals that I have designed.
I love the challenge of playing with color, dying wool and thinking of designs to hook.
